Dr. Mike Fox, Dr. Marty Ivey and Dr. Steve Hurlbert were friendly competitors at Trinity Meadows Racetrack when they decided to join forces. Their partnership became Equine Sports Medicine and Surgery, which in the beginning was simply a supply and billing office in Weatherford, Texas. toward treatment of the equine athlete. Their vision became our current state of the art equine medicine and surgery facility which opened its doors in September of 2001.

Dr. Marty Ivey comes from a large farming family in the lower valley of El Paso. After graduating from high school in 1982, he attended Texas A&M University where he received a BS in Animal Science in 1986 and his veterinary degree in 1990. He began his career as a veterinarian at Ruidoso Downs, New Mexico and eventually began working at Trinity Meadows Racetrack near Weatherford, Texas. This work lead to his relationship and eventual partnership with Dr. Mike Fox and Dr. Steve Hurlbert.

Dr. Ivey and his wife Dawn have three daughters, Renae, Macy and Bailey. His special interests are veterinary care of equine athletes in general, racing Quarter Horses and western sports horses specifically.

Dr. Ivey serves as a member on the local school board in Brock. He also serves on the AAEP Racing Committee and the AAEP On Call Program as a veterinary consultant for televised Quarter Horse stakes races in his region.





Dr. Steve Hurlbert grew up in Missouri. He graduated from Oklahoma State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine in 1985.
After vet school, Dr. Hurlbert went to work at La Mesa Park in Raton, New Mexico with Dr. Fox and his partners. He spent time at Remington Park and later worked the Trinity Meadows Racetrack near Weatherford, Texas where he later formed ESMS with partners Dr. Ivey and Fox.

Dr. Hurlbert and his wife Terri have three children, Briley, Brooklyn and Stetson. Dr. Hurlbert’s special interests are lameness and podiatry.




Dr. Mike Fox grew up in Guymon, Oklahoma. He graduated from Oklahoma State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine in 1982.
He began his career on the racetrack in Raton, New Mexico at La Mesa Park. He spent time at Remington Park and later worked the Trinity Meadows Racetrack near Weatherford, Texas where he later formed ESMS with partners Dr. Ivey and Hurlbert.

Dr. Fox and his wife Lanae have three children, Sarah, Jonathon and Haley. His primary focus is sports medicine for the racing quarter horse.
